About this Project

This blog is intended to serve as a vehicle by which I could share the progress of a special project I undertook with my friends and family while attending the University of South Carolina.

The purpose of this was project was twofold, I wanted to challenge myself by taking on an ambitious project, while at the same time building something that could be used to benefit the community.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always had an interest for machinery so I decided to challenge myself to design and build an excavator's arm and it’s hydraulic system entirely from scratch with the goal of being able to use it at philanthropic events around Columbia, SC. At these events, young students were able to control the excavator arm via the hydraulic control valves. Many of the students had never had the opportunity to control a piece of machinery before but were very engaged and eager to try their hand at the controls. The hope was that after explaining how the machine worked and showing them that engineers get to build some pretty cool devices, they would begin to become intrigued with the idea of becoming an engineer themselves.

This project could not have been accomplished without help from local companies like Eaton Corporation and Hydraulic Supply Company. Many of the hydraulic components were donated by these two companies.

Additionally, during the design phase of this project drawings were created for machined parts and FEA models were analyzed for critically stress components. Unfortunately, all the model, drawing, and FEA files were lost due to a hard disk failure sometime after the project was completed.

The Finished Project

The project was completed in time for Engineers Week at USC, and the students that came to visit ranged from K-12. The students enjoyed controlling the hydraulic arm and it was evident that the parents enjoyed the exhibit as well.
